چکیده

Médico y biólogo cubano. Estudió en Estados Unidos, graduándose en 1855 por el Jefferson Medical College de Filadelfia, para volver después a Cuba. Ya en 1868 propuso la adopción de medidas profilácticas y sanitarias durante una epidemia de cólera, sin mucho éxito. Sin embargo, su principal trabajo consistió en dilucidar cómo se producía la transmisión de la fiebre amarilla por los mosquitos. Concluyó que entre un sujeto infectado y otro sano, había un agente independiente que transmitía la enfermedad. Católico practicante, le confió a un sacerdote que una noche mientras rezaba el rosario, le llamó la atención un mosquito zumbando a su alrededor. Entonces, dijo, se le ocurrió investigar a los mosquitos.
